grass versus artificial turf: a google map

Threw the field data into the Google Map API (pretty easy to do, actually). Generated this:

* not much artificial in the southeast (actually just one, FIU, of 11 fields in Florida, Georgia, or South Carolina)

* not much grass in the pacific northwest

* if you zoom in to our region: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=https:%2F%2Fspreadsheets.google.com%2Fspreadsheet%2Fpub%3...
it's mostly artificial, with Northwestern, Purdue, both Iowa schools, and Ohio State being the exceptions (Michigan State has grass with an asterisk).

* it would be interesting to overlay FCS as well.

speaking of FCS, this stuff looks pretty natural.

Isn't it strange

that in areas where the weather is perfect year round, you can grow and maintain real grass, but in areas where the weather is constantly fluctuating, and you have to deal with things like snow, most schools opt for turf?

Weird!

Thats a pretty cool map that needs wider distribution
