I guess he didn't like my TE idea

by BPH, San Diego, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 09:06 (16 days ago) @ Chris

It's a sign of the health of our roster that when I wrote my post yesterday and was thinking about our top seven receivers, I just assumed that Thomas and Colzie wouldn't be part of the equation. But both were great teammates at ND and I wish them well.

Bummed about Thomas

by Joe I @, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 09:00 (16 days ago) @ Chris

I really liked his flashes as a player.

Best #83 Moments

by Mike (bart), Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 09:27 (16 days ago) @ Joe I

- Awesome MOSS catch for a long TD against BYU in 2022
- Some great move blocking before his hammy got him in 2023
- Really good swiss army knife in 2024. Had a TD vs. Stanford and a big TD in the IU playoff game

He had one of those "pyramid"-shaped careers

by IrishGuard, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 13:00 (16 days ago) @ Mike (bart)

you see when a short-handed team presses young players into action, and then requires less of them as the team's roster improves in subsequent years. Wonder if Knapp's career will take the same shape.

Possible, but I think Knapp as an OL is much much better

by BillyGoat, At Thanksgiving with Joe Bethersontin, Thursday, January 23, 2025, 07:16 (15 days ago) @ IrishGuard

at more different things than Thomas is as a WR.

Knapp strikes me as another Hainsey

by BPH, San Diego, Thursday, January 23, 2025, 09:04 (15 days ago) @ BillyGoat

A guy who's advanced for his age, can play anywhere effectively, and will be valued in the NFL for his versatility.

He had a sneaky neat story this year

by Jeremy (WeIsND), Offices of Babip Pecota Vorp & Eckstein, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 09:07 (16 days ago) @ Chris

I'm sure his career hasn't at all gone the way he'd liked, but he was a weapon in short-yardage running, particularly on the goal line. I bet when he got on campus, he never thought he'd turn into a hammer, blocking the shit out of dudes.

OL Roster Thoughts

by BillyGoat, At Thanksgiving with Joe Bethersontin, Thursday, January 23, 2025, 06:21 (15 days ago) @ HumanRobot

As far as I can tell, Baker is the only OL to be out of eligibility.

Two guys with one year left:
Rocco - Probably 50-50 at best to return.

Coogan - Sounds like he's back.

With two years left:
Wagner - Incumbent starter at RT. I suppose he might not have an ironclad grip on the position if someone like Lambert makes a big move and we like Jagusah at LT better than Wagner at RT. But it's probably pretty safe he stays in place.

Craig - Not sure his recovery timeline. That, more than anything, might keep him at ND if Coogan is entrenched at starting C. But a good player who we would like to keep.

Schrauth - Certain starter at G next year. Poised for a breakout once he's healthy.

Chan - Listed as an academic junior. Zero indication that he is ever going to play from scrimmage. Maybe he can finish his degree over the summer and open a spot? Or maybe he will transfer elsewhere to play.

With three years left:
Pendleton - Gone.

Knapp - A possible/probable starter next year. Definite starter in 2026.

Terek - Super early. Big, physical dude.

Jagusah - A definite starter next year.

Otting - Seems like he's only a C. If Knapp becomes the future at that spot, what will he do?

Prescod - I hope he's healthy. Then we can find out what we've got.

Jones - Ask again later. My gut is that he's in a battle with Terek and that if one guy falls behind, he would probably transfer. But I doubt that's imminent.

Absher - IMO, the wildcard in all this. And the oft-forgotten man. Large, talented, and versatile. Could make a move to start in 2025, probably at G but could throw his hat into the ring at RT.

Lambert - The future is bright.

Sounds like Coogan is returning

by BPH, San Diego, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 13:13 (16 days ago) @ HumanRobot

He seems like a guy who loves ND so much that he wouldn't need to be guaranteed a starting spot. Perhaps an interior super sub.

But maybe he did. It will be interesting to see how the

by BillyGoat, At Thanksgiving with Joe Bethersontin, Thursday, January 23, 2025, 06:10 (15 days ago) @ BPH

dominoes fall. If we promised Coogan that he would start, then Craig probably heads for the exit.

I mean, his name is Pat and he went to Marist HS

Brilliant. My favorite line from that story -

by hlewis, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 11:41 (16 days ago) @ Slainte Joe

and would vie for my favorite in any story:

'Robert Wilson, whose entire occupation had been with the lion and the problem he presented, and who had not been thinking about Macomber except to note that he was rather windy, suddenly felt as though he had opened the wrong door in a hotel and seen something shameful.'

Hmmm

by Mike (bart), Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 05:32 (17 days ago) @ HumanRobot

A bit odd since we just got confirmation that you can win with Jagusah at LT. Wonder if this is Spindler related. Pecking order for time something like:

Wagner/Scrauth/Jagusah/Knapp
Craig/Spindler/Coogan
Lambert/Pendleton

where do you slot Knapp in there?

by HumanRobot @, Cybertron, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 05:34 (17 days ago) @ Mike (bart)

Played his ass off at LT but definitely has a G/C body from my amateur perspective.

IMO the ideal approach with Knapp is ...

by BillyGoat, At Thanksgiving with Joe Bethersontin, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 06:43 (16 days ago) @ HumanRobot

Tell him, "Kid, you did an amazing job all year. Nobody outside this building could have even imagined you accomplishing what you did. You did what's best for the team and now you get to do what's best for you. You're going to get a year to work on your body and on your skills. You needed that coming in, but Jagusah's injury robbed you of that. You're going to be a junior with 2-3 more years to kick ass."

Then he apprentices behind Craig and/or Coogan at center.

I know most think G is best spot for both Knapp & Jagusah

by GloveND, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 07:50 (16 days ago) @ BillyGoat

But if we don't have a true LT, i think the question is are you better with:

Jagusah/Schrauth/Craig/Knapp/Wagner

or

Knapp/Schrauth/Craig/Jagusah/Wagner

*Craig may be replaced with Coogan in both.

I can't tell how much Jagusah training at G in playoffs was that we all knew Spindler was playing on one ankle and most likely guy that needed to be relieved. You hope that Lambert or Will Black are eventually more true LT that push the LT inside to Guard (or Center for Knapp). Will be interested to see what else shakes out along the line during portal here. Given Coogan love of ND, one thinks paying him to be a super sub at G or C (and possibly start at C if Craig is not ready) is very possible.

I doubt that Jagusah gets pushed off LT

by KGB, Belly o. the Beast, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 07:59 (16 days ago) @ GloveND

anytime soon based on how he performed the other night. At least until Will Black proves that he's primed to play like "Control-Alt-Delete" 2.0.

Golic Jr. has been raving about his performance on Twitter

by BPH, San Diego, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 08:07 (16 days ago) @ KGB

He's the rare player who could dominate at tackle or guard. Like OSU's Donovan Jackson but bigger and stronger.

any chance Will Black plays as a frosh?

by HumanRobot @, Cybertron, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 07:55 (16 days ago) @ GloveND

IMO Jagusah was a lot better at LT than Knapp. The only way I see Jagusah at guard in 2025 is a combo like Black/Schrauth/Craig/Jagusah/Wagner with Knapp as the 6th OL.

What's important is that he doesn't have to. If he shows

by BillyGoat, At Thanksgiving with Joe Bethersontin, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 08:58 (16 days ago) @ HumanRobot

up and is head and shoulders the best guy for the job, then he wins it.

Otherwise, he gets a year to get stronger and learn.

I suppose there's also a possibility that some of that apprenticeship involves him as a quasi-blocking TE. I could see a role for Absher in that regard as well, in short yardage packages.

Seriously doubt it.

edited by KGB, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 08:57

Just not necessary. We have other, more seasoned and still talented options. And he hasn't exactly been playing against the best prep talent to date. But after he gets a year under his belt practicing and in Landow's program, all bets are off.

EDIT - I assume by "plays" you means starts. I do think it's possible that he works his way into the second line at LT and gets some game snaps as the season unfolds.

He has the ability to

by BPH, San Diego, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 08:04 (16 days ago) @ HumanRobot

and in years past he might have been the best option. But I think we will have the luxury of allowing him to redshirt and be ready to steamroll dudes by 2026.

Thanks for mentioning C

by River, Hell of the Upside Down Sinners, Wednesday, January 22, 2025, 07:47 (16 days ago) @ BillyGoat

I thought I was taking crazy pills thinking that Knapp might be an ideal fit at C down the line.i saw it mentioned after his signing, but then the switch happened and it was as if that C idea ever existed.

I like this idea.
