Irish Illustrated tweeting that "its unclear if he'll play"

This weekend against Purdue.

Maybe they got some results back during/after the press conference? I can appreciate Freeman being all Belichick about this, but another example of some strange behavior/public statements.

I don't know what his contract says, but

I kind of get not benching him at the end

by Jeff (BGS) @, A starter home in suburban Tempe, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 19:14 (86 days ago) @ Chris

ND had the lead until later in the fourth quarter. Until Leonard threw the interception, it looked like we were going to escape with the win. The next opportunity was with 24 seconds left in the game, so putting a cold QB in that situation was unlikely to work out.

Hindsight is 20/20, but looking back at the flow of the game, there weren’t many obvious opportunities to make a QB change.

walking off the field after that play. Referenced this below, but given other options it is beyond idiotic to put Leonard back on the field if he's physically compromised to such a degree that it affects how he plays or how the staff uses him. Particularly in a close game.

A decision at this level is Freeman's call and he screwed the pooch Saturday, IMO.

And that's what would happen with a torn labrum

by Jeremy (WeIsND), Offices of Babip Pecota Vorp & Eckstein, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 10:52 (86 days ago) @ KGB

Your arm basically dislocates with certain movements/in certain positions. Its painful when the dislocation happens, but isn't terribly painful at rest.

Signed, a guy who tore his labrum 20 years ago.

And it was the non-throwing arm, right?

- Riley's camp getting that out there as a way to defuse some of the criticism of his play.
- ND's camp getting that out there as a way to clear a path for him to be benched.
- He's actually injured.

I think it's all 3 at once.

Safe bet he's been told

by Jeremy (WeIsND), Offices of Babip Pecota Vorp & Eckstein, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 11:44 (86 days ago) @ MattG

Its not going to affect your ability to throw (obviously), but you should probably try to avoid getting driven into the ground on your left side to make it worse.

If his ability to run has basically been neutered, I don't even know why there's a discussion here. They can't possibly believe he's a better option as a pocket passer than Angeli, or even Minchey.

If that's the injury

by Jeremy (WeIsND), Offices of Babip Pecota Vorp & Eckstein, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 10:51 (86 days ago) @ NDinVA

It wouldn't be one that would necessarily keep him from playing, or even drastically affect his ability to play. But running him out there at less than 90% (likely) when he's already clearly not playing well, and have viable options on the bench, is akin to coaching malpractice.

was that official from ND, or from reporting

The Fighting Irish signal-caller underwent an MRI on his non-throwing shoulder over the weekend, which revealed the ailment. If he actually has an identifiable injury, we already know it's affecting him. Lack of runs after that stupid throwaway plus "The Underthrow" clearly show it's a problem.

Either the coaches are wantonly irresponsible, or we actually don't have a better option. Neither are good.

What scares the bejeezus out of me when it comes to Leonard

is that I'm asking myself whether Wimbush is the right comparison or whether, at least at times, his passing has been closer to Andrew Hendrix.

Once you're asking THAT question........

Wimbush was way better than Leonard

by Mike (bart), Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 14:37 (86 days ago) @ BillyGoat

He was a 95th percentile runner from the QB position and could run a great script through the air

Riley Leonard has a body of evidence at a power-conference school that suggests he's on a different level as a passer than the guys who are being mentioned as comps. He was 64% on completions at Duke across 13 games two years ago, threw TD/INT at over a 3/1 rate. That's not Penix level but it's pretty good for an underclassman playing without much skill talent at his disposal.

Brandon Wimbush started at ND for parts of two seasons. In the longer stint where he started 12 games, Wimbush completed fewer than 50% of his pass attempts. He returned the following season and bumped that up to a hot 53% rate and threw 4 TDs to go along with 6 interceptions. He had a big arm and some potential, but Wimbush was an unmitigated disaster throwing the football. His body of work in the art of screen passes is nearly unparalleled among college QBs.

Getting back to Leonard, there's clearly some discomfort with Denbrock's system and a lack of chemistry with the receivers right now. But this is based on a sample size of two (2) games, the first of which ended with him completing a couple of clutch throws and leading the team on an 85-yard, game-winning TD drive late in the fourth quarter in a hostile environment. Maybe he never gets appreciably better at throwing the football here; maybe he never even gets the opportunity based on the news of the day. But I think it's presumptuous to pass judgment about Leonard based on such a small sample size when he's exhibited a level of competence elsewhere.

Agreed

by Greg, seemingly ranch, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 15:37 (86 days ago) @ KGB

I don't know whether he's a great or good or mediocre or poor QB.

I do know that one pass was horrifically underthrown and likely cost ND the game on Saturday and that for much of the game he appeared out of sync with his receivers (particularly vis-a-vis NIU's much inferior QB who was clearly very in sync with his own). And yeah, I said go ahead and sit him. But it wasn't because I don't think he's good. It was because after a loss like that you have to reevaluate this season and start coaching and playing for next (or for your pro draft ranking if you're out of eligibility).

Yes. Leonard's full body of work is much better than those

by BillyGoat, At Thanksgiving with Joe Bethersontin, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 15:04 (86 days ago) @ KGB

other two guys. But based on his play so far this year, the mere fact that I even THOUGHT of Andrew Hendrix is big trouble.

I'm only going off what I've seen at ND

by Mike (bart), Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 15:17 (86 days ago) @ BillyGoat

Wimbush was awesome as a runner and decent as a passer for much of 2017. 16 TDs and 6 INTs passing (121 Rating) to go with 14 TDs and 800+ rushing yards at 5.7 per. Leonard has 3.4 ypc on 23 rushes (pace for 120 yards) and 5.2 ypa/98 pass rating

I feel like a jerk but also remember Leonard has cleared more $$$ this year than Wimbush, whom I assume is having a good and productive professional career, is likely to clear before he turns 35

by atxND, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 10:30 (86 days ago) @ ReginaldVelJohnson

it's quite another to continue with the same course of action that got you in that situation to begin with. Like one I can, maybe with time, understand if not forgive, but the second will get me to "fire him" much, much sooner.

Remember, Leonard missed all spring practice

by ndbk32 @, Los Angeles, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, 10:35 (86 days ago) @ atxND
