ND vs. Syracuse at Yankee Stadium 11/17

by Buffalo @, The Dirty South, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 12:08

Thoughts on this?

It seems like another self-inflicted wound.

Our open date falls on the second weekend of Fall break. Starting October 27, we play:

at Navy (IN SAN DIEGO)

at Northwestern (Chicago)

vs FSU

vs Syracuse (IN NEW YORK)

at Southern Cal

The Navy game will require a major time change and travel through the night on the way home. The Syracuse game will be a night game, and also will likely require travel home through the night.

I guess one could argue that this looks like 2010, when we played this slate:

11/6 OPEN
11/13 vs Tulsa (South Bend)
11/20 vs Army (Yankee Stadium)
11/27 at SC (L.A.)

I think it is pretty clear that next year's FSU-Syracuse-SC opponents are better than '10's slate.

I have a difficult time seeing how moving the Syracuse game to NY helps the football program (certainly not on balance).

And it especially doesn't do much for those of us planning to actually sit through the damn thing.

But the silver lining (and I'm always looking for the silver lining) is that there likely won't be a sea of garnet.

I haven't seen hard evidence that cold weather

by Jack @, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 14:34 @ PMan

affects one team more than the other based on where either team is from.

I've seen far more evidence that hot weather does.

But it was clear Miami had lost the game when they came out of the tunnel.

I wonder the last time ND played a non-bowl game not on Saturday? Minus the Sunday Texas game.

EDIT: There are some wonky dates in there. That 2019 schedule has ND playing against Georgia on a Sunday, which cannot be correct.

by Greg, the 'Dena, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 13:46 @ Chris

It was a season opener, if memory serves, so there was no downside to playing on Thursday night other than the missed class time in the first or second week of school.

by Jack @, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 14:10 @ Greg
edited by Jack, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 14:14

we play a team like Florida State lately, have you? And you are aware what the ticket prices are now, right? The closest hotel I could get with a reasonable price is 50 miles away, so I might as well go the other 50 miles.

So easy to say such things from southern California, or from people from anywhere not planning to attend in the first place.

Yes Jack, I have

by Greg, the 'Dena, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 14:14 @ Jack

I look at prices annually. It's why I can't get to games like I'd want to and haven't been to campus in years. Try adding in a plane flight and rental car to the hotel tab and see if it makes it better or worse for you.

I'm sorry that deciding whether to go to this game will cause you the same heartache that literally every game since 2006 has caused me.

You moved to California

by Jack @, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 14:21 @ Greg

How is that supposed to make me want to say "oh, that's OK, I guess a night game in November is fine." Or "oh goody, it's going to be really cold!!! I hope it snows, too!"

And it has nothing to do with "dinner plans". I don't make "dinner plans" after day games either.

I go to just about all home games. If you lived where I do, you'd feel the same way I do. In September, fine. In November, it absolutely sucks.

I grew up here

by Greg, the 'Dena, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 14:29 @ Jack

The Notre Dame alumni family isn't all located within a drive of campus. Some people who live farther away make it a priority to get to as many games as they can, some look at the financial hit and other priorities and get to fewer or none. I don't judge anyone for their decisions. I'm simply noting that it's interesting to see the reaction of somebody who lives within a (long) drive when you're faced with just one of the cost issues that face us when we have to decide whether or not to fly in for a game.

And just as a point of comparison, I did find it worthwhile to fly out for the Fenway game. It was 42 degrees at kickoff. I lived.

I also went to the Miami game

by Jack @, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 14:41 @ Greg
edited by Jack, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 14:48

I am fully aware of the costs of going to a football game across the country.

You go to one game a year. I go to seven because I can. You can go to the beach in January. I can't. Don't expect me to like something I don't like.

I just plain don't appreciate the "dinner plans" comments. It's a pain in the fucking ass driving home in November after midnight. That is all.

I spent most of the fourth quarter in some bourbon bar in the upper deck, more because it was heated than anything to do with the bourbon. So I can understand why they might prefer a daytime kickoff on the return trip.
