Scary stuff

by Bill, Southern California, Wednesday, December 06, 2017, 10:55

And FYI, UCLA's campus is about two miles from the 405, between Sunset and Wilshire.

My daughter came home from SLO last night on Amtrak.

by River, Hell of the Upside Down Sinners, Wednesday, December 06, 2017, 15:00 @ Bill

They were shutting down the 101 in Ventura as they walked the train through checking the tracks in front of them. No power and all the crossing stations were unlit. She said it was scary and her videos are pretty spectacular. She was through Ventura about 635-7PM. Got into Fullerton at 1045pm.

Greg also referred to The 405 as just 405.

My daughters actually lived for a while in an apartment close to the intersection of Sepulveda and Venice Boulevard, right next to "The" 405.

It's the 405. It's also the 101, but that's...

by Greg, sittin on the dock of the bay, Wednesday, December 06, 2017, 14:36 @ Grantland

...not an interstate.

Generally, it comes from the fact that the freeways here all originally went by names -- the Pasadena Freeway, the Harbor Freeway, the San Bernardino Freeway, the Golden State Freeway, the Hollywood Freeway, the San Diego Freeway. But some of them -- e.g., the Golden State and the San Diego; the San Bernardino and the Santa Monica -- shared numbers. So at some point we changed from using exclusively the names to using the numbers. But we still retained the "the." Verbally, I always use the "the," though in writing I may use "Interstate ##."

PCH was never a freeway, so it's just PCH.

I get mixed up between the Getty Center and the Getty Villa.
I have two daughters that live off Wilshire Blvd, but they are quite a bit further inland near Park LaBrea and The Grove. They have been texting me that the whole city smells like ashes.

Wildfires in December

Climate change is real. But this isn’t all that unusual.

by Ken Fowler, Wednesday, December 06, 2017, 22:49 @ BPH

At least four other major fires have burned in the area between Nov. 20 and Dec 31:
-1938 Topanga
-1956 Newton
-1958 Malibu Canyon
-2007 Corral

This old LAT story has a pre-1985 list of the worst fires the region had seen, a number of which were November/December: http://articles.latimes.com/1985-07-02/local/me-619_1_major-fires

This could be climate change induced, but it’s also something that would be a threat even without it.

What the jet stream is doing is unusual

by HullieAndMikes, Joe Turner's bookcase, ALHS, Thursday, December 07, 2017, 06:07 @ Ken Fowler

and is going to become more and more frequent. It's basically the mirror image of December 2015, when every city in the northeast set a record high on Christmas at midnight because it was in the 70s and humid. It was warmer on Dec. 25, 2015, in Central Park than on July 4, 2016.

These massive blocks on either end of the continent are wreaking havoc.

Al Franken is resigning tomorrow

by hobbs, San Diego, Wednesday, December 06, 2017, 13:24 @ KGB

Another accuser came forward today and at last count 25 Democrats have called on him to resign.

Meanwhile, as you say, Roy Moore sashays his way into the upper chamber of the US. Senate.

Kinda sucks that Franken is leaving in disgrace while Beauregard Sessions remains atop the justice department and DJT remains in the Oval Office.

Projections are for a bad night

by Greg, sittin on the dock of the bay, Wednesday, December 06, 2017, 11:06 @ Jay
edited by Greg, Wednesday, December 06, 2017, 11:11

Winds were high on Monday night/Tuesday morning, driving the fires in Ventura, Sylmar, and Santa Clarita (and the smaller ones here and there -- those three are all over 5000 acres). Winds died substantially yesterday afternoon and evening and it's much calmer today. But the projection is for high winds this evening and overnight, and through tomorrow. Could get really ugly.

That Sepulveda Pass fire came up fast though, even without huge winds. It was 6 acres when I got on the elliptical machine at the gym at 5:05. It was over 50 acres when I got off at 5:40. Crazy stuff.

Just hoping for a quiet night tonight.
