any thoughts on his abilities as a recruiter?
by Pat, in the cloud, Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 16:01 (2682 days ago) @ Jay
ND needs some gaps filled in the defensive depth chart, asap.
No indication of any history of recruiting top players.

Wake does have one 4* DL from Georgia committed this year, though.
Would be nice to grab one or two of his Wake commits

conclusion: not sexy, but competent
by Jay , San Diego, Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 10:12 (2682 days ago) @ Jay
He's producing statistically slightly above average defenses at Wake Forest which is encouraging.
Taking into account merely "competent" would have gotten us to the playoffs last year and put us at 8+ wins this year, I'll take competent.

on defense is going forward. From what I've read and seen, he typically doesn't concern himself with defense all that much. I wonder if he'll give the same trust to Elko that he did with Diaco and BVG.
I don't know the specifics at WFU, but Clawson was an offensive guy so it could have been the same dynamic there. Which would concern me as a Wake Forest fan because Clawson's offenses have been horrible.

Seriously, though, this would be about as good a hire as I could have hoped for --- a guy who could make us really strong in one specific area. If he could come in and engineer a big leap from our young DBs it would be a pretty big deal

I agree. Doesn't seem like the next Dave Aranda (and
by BillyGoat, At Thanksgiving with Joe Bethersontin, Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 10:24 (2682 days ago) @ Jay
certainly not the current Dave Aranda), but that's a good all-around defense. And the intangibles listed below (familiarity with the option, coaching at a school with academic standard, familiarity with the ACC, and I'd add experience in deigning a defense without anything resembling elite front seven talent*) bolster his case as a quality hire at ND.
*ND talent is undoubtedly superior to what Elko has had at Wake. But I've seen ND fans argue that we should "BUTBT" for Venables. IIRC, the Venables defenses at Oklahoma were not terribly well regarded. Venables' defenses at Clemson have been amazing, but he's had the luxury of incredible DL talent down there that just isn't available at ND. I feel better about Elko building on his success at Wake based on the improved talent than I would feel about Venables replicating his success at Clemson.
added in turnover numbers. about average
by Jay , San Diego, Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 09:54 (2682 days ago) @ Jay
The national average is around 22 gained per season. Elko's teams hover around that, but they took a big leap between 2015 and 2016.
What about TFL and sack numbers?

observations
by HumanRobot , Cybertron, Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 08:45 (2682 days ago) @ Jay
If you assume he's at a massive talent deficit at Wake, then his performance there looks good. Definitely in light of the Kelly "keep points down" mantra. Some really nice top end performances at Bowling Green where his talent level was probably more comparable. To opposition.
I don't think Brown from BC is an appropriate comparison, since he got those top end results at a massive talent deficit as well.
Seems like a solid DC, but I don't see anything that screams "elite DC".
I glanced at Wake recruiting rankings yesterday

by Jeremy (WeIsND), Offices of Babip Pecota Vorp & Eckstein, Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 11:09 (2682 days ago) @ Jay
But probably safe to assume we're looking at something closer to Diaco/BVG than Fickell on that front.
This doesn't address him specifically
by BPH, San Diego, Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 13:54 (2682 days ago) @ Jeremy (WeIsND)
But of Wake's 18 commitments, eight of them are 3 stars or higher on Rivals, and six of those are defensive players.

Syracuse sort of fell off offensively as the year went on, but this was still a good performance for Wake's defense.

Looking at Bowling Green's 2013 season
by CK08, Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 08:27 (2682 days ago) @ LaFortune Teller
Where they were 5th in points allowed while having weak rankings in the advanced stats, they absolutely dominated some really bad teams defensively: Murray State, UMass, Miami of Ohio, and Eastern Michigan scored 24 points combined. They did have a couple of impressive games though - shutting out a decent Ohio team and only allowing 7 to Tulsa, who was bad but managed to score against everyone else.
There aren't any red flags the rest of the season (42 points to an explosive Indiana offense is understandable at Bowling Green), but I think the really bad teams are the source of the impressive PPG number.
That said, if we can start completely shutting down bad offenses (which we haven't done since the 2014 Michigan game), that's progress already. There's two tough games next September (Boston College and Michigan State) that we could win by doing exactly that.

Looking strictly at points per game
by Jeff (BGS) , A starter home in suburban Tempe, Tuesday, December 13, 2016, 13:09 (2682 days ago) @ Jim (fisherj08)
There seems to be an improvement (~10% at Wake, ~25% at BG):
Wake:
2011 27.4
2012 31.8
2013 24.1 (27.8 ppg)
2014 26.4
2015 24.6
2016 21.8 (24.3 ppg)
Bowling Green
2008 23.2
2009 27.5
2010 33.6 (28.1 ppg)
2011 28.8
2012 16.8
2013 15.9 (20.5 ppg)
Compare that to ND
2011 20.7
2012 12.8
2013 22.4 (18.6 ppg)
2014 29.2
2015 24.1
2016 27.8 (27.0 ppg)
Even throwing out 2012, that is really damning for BVG.
