The 2017 class will be a Top 5 class.

More to the point though, Kelly mentioned today that the focus of that class will be the OL. He also said that ND finally had good depth at every position so the class will try to maintain that balance. It is a bit interesting since they have tended to have boom or bust years at various positions.

More to the point though, Kelly mentioned today that the focus of that class will be the OL. He also said that ND finally had good depth at every position so the class will try to maintain that balance. It is a bit interesting since they have tended to have boom or bust years at various positions.

They may get a great OL haul -- 4 or 5, say. But they won't all be top-100 or top-250, in part because they're OL and in part because ND will get three of them to commit before July and, like every year, the biggest jumps come from uncommitted recruits.

I also think the "balance" issue won't work out the way Kelly wants because he'll wind up needing to focus on a couple areas to too great an extent -- if OL takes 5 spots, and we know that defensive line and LB need a couple each, we could be at 10 of the 23 (or so) total slots taken by those three areas. And I figure we'll have some problem -- guys not panning out, injuries, or other -- because that's been the story of ND for decades.

Finally, this looks to be a bad year for RB and WR recruiting because we'll be so full -- other than needing speed demon WRs. Which is weird, because it's also going to be a year when we need a really top QB. Normally you'd find a top QB leading a treasure trove of guys to whom to get the ball; maybe it'll be a low-numbers, high-quality group?

In any event, I see us landing somewhere between 7 and 13. Which I also am starting to think is about where we'll be landing almost every year from here on out -- for a variety of reasons both specific to ND and arising from the nature of the product that recruiting websites sell.

Scout guys on names to know for '17

Rough estimate...

by Eric M, Western New York, Wednesday, February 03, 2016, 17:08 @ Pat

You need at least a couple 5-stars and no more than 30% of your class to be 3-stars.

An outline for 25 recruits like this:

5-stars: 2
4-stars: 17
3-stars: 6

There was brief talk that we could finish with a Top 5 class this year with Robertson, Kelly, and McCulloch but even that wouldn't have done it. You can't have 13 recruits as 3-stars and finish that high.

Considering where we stand with specialists

by Jeremy (WeIsND), Offices of Babip Pecota Vorp & Eckstein, Wednesday, February 03, 2016, 18:54 @ Eric M

We probably won't see any long snappers, punters or kickers in the 2017 class. Unfairly or no, those guys tend to drag down the ratings a bit, particularly with a little smaller class.

I'll say Yes. The 2013 class ranked No. 5 in the Composite

by BillyGoat, At Thanksgiving with Joe Bethersontin, Wednesday, February 03, 2016, 15:50 @ Pat

without Vanderdoes. That was with 2 five stars, 17 four stars, and 4 three stars. I think that is attainable if we post a second 10+ win regular season and contend for the playoffs.

I'll say no

Top 12, maybe top 10.

I think we'll trend around the top 4-7 until February hits then when the final elite players start picking their schools we'll settle in.

I do think it's likely that we will be addressing building depth rather than worrying about shoring up any particular position.

It probably won't include a super highly-ranked QB which tends to be a necessity for the Top 5 classes. So for that reason, I'll say we finish just outside the Top 5.
