The discussion between suave and me raised a recruiting question on next year's QB recruits. Here's the thread:
http://www.bluegraysky.com/forum/index.php?id=31805
For next year, I know we have Baby Mauk on the radar, and he's a thrower. Is there anybody else we're actively recruiting already? Any dual-threat guys?
Just to clarify

I'm not saying Kelly doesn't want dual-threat QBs. I actually think that Kelly's offense functions best when he has a QB that can also run the ball. But I do think that passing ability is a bigger factor for him; i.e. starting Pike over Callaros (sp) at Cincy once Pike got healthy again, despite Callaros putting up amazing numbers in Pike's absence. It's hard to make real judgment calls on his recruiting preference because being a dual-threat QB doesn't mean you can't throw the ball. Works the other way too (see Andrew luck).
If I had to guess - and this is just my own personal observations - on how Kelly would order what he values in his QBs, it would be 1) grasp of offense 2) poise and toughness 3) throwing ability and 4) running ability.
And I'd also venture that #3 is far closer in importance to #1 and #2 than running ability is to any of them.
as if on cue, BK commented on this very topic today

Q. For the last several weeks one of the main topics has been running the quarterback and how it has to be important for the overall effectiveness of the offense. You have five quarterbacks on the roster who played outside of maybe Tommy Rees more of a pro style set. Do you see your recruiting changing as far as an emphasis on a dual front quarterback to run your offense?
COACH KELLY: He's got to have the ability to keep you honest. He can't just throw fast balls. He's got to have at least one breaking pitch. He can't just bring one skill set to the table. This guy is being recruited by Alabama, this guy is being recruited by -- it really doesn't matter who they're recruiting, what other schools are recruiting. We're looking for a guy that can run the spread. So however that wants to be phrased, the University of Notre Dame is looking for a quarterback that can run the spread, and what does that entail? He can't just be a thrower and he can't just be a runner.
So does he have to be a dual threat? No, not necessarily, but he'd better be able to at least keep you honest when you're in the spread offense.
Q. Does it help if he does run the spread offense as opposed to a pro style in high school?
COACH KELLY: Not necessarily. That's probably the least of my concerns. My biggest concerns are when we're talking about the spread is how the ball comes out of his hand. It's got to come out like that. So I'm evaluating quarterbacks based upon how the ball comes out of his hands. It's got to come out quickly.

Wow, never been called a maven

That's good, right?
Kelly certainly isn't making things easy on us when it comes to identifying his recruiting prototype at QB. On one hand, you can say he recruited guys like LeFevour and Collaros whereas he inherited Pike, so clearly he prefers the dual-threat guys. But then he comes to ND and adds Massa to a haul that includes three Pike-type pocket passers (though apparently Hendrix has some pretty good wheels).
In this class, Kelly targeted Starling, a truly dynamic runner, but when that fell through, he considered offering Philip Ely, a traditional QB who, based on his picking Alabama, is probably in the mold of Greg McElroy.
For 2012, I'm not that familiar with QB recruits beyond the initial triumvirate of Mauk, Kiel and Gray Crow, who was originally targeted by Weis and seems to have fallen by the wayside. I have to think that Mauk will be the guy. He's the only QB with an offer, he's putting up video-game numbers, and Kelly knows what he's getting after coaching his brother. Mauk isn't a Starling-type runner, but he's not a Pike-type statue, either. Besides his brother, maybe a good comparison would be a player like Forcier (without the douchiness).
That's so maven.

"Pageant Talk", with Gene and Wanda Gayle Shemp. The only reason I can think of that they saved it for last was that Galifianakis apparently shaved his beard down into a moustache during commercial (there's a clip on the internet that shows him coming off stage, shaving while changing in wardrobe and then going back onto the set for the noted skit two minutes later), and perhaps they didn't want to deal with that for the duration.
Anyway, I'm pretty much obsessed with the skit and continue to throw literally tens of dollars at Hollywood studios to spin that sucker into a full-length feature film.

watch his "Live at the Purple Onion" standup set. It's on Netflix streaming, and is essentially an extended, uncensored cut of his SNL monologue.

He doesn't seem to be in any rush with the QBs
by Jeremy (WeIsND), Offices of Babip Pecota Vorp & Eckstein, Tuesday, October 05, 2010, 11:47 (5240 days ago) @ Jay
And even the Rivals/ISD guys don't seem sure as to who's got an offer.
The usual suspects are Mauk, Kiel and Gray Crow (from FL - more of a drop-back guy) because all 3 have visited/camped at ND on multiple occasions.
There's a kid down in FL (whose name escapes me at the moment) who's claiming a verbal offer from Kelly. IIRC, he's more of a running QB, but Kelly may be recruiting him as an ATH.
I guess the short answer is that its too early to tell. I'm curious to see when we start getting some more concrete info on the next class. Though if today is any indication, he's going to have his hands full keeping this class together.

Kelly's QB recruiting

c/o your awesome Rivals downloading abilities. I looked up all the quarterback offers (not just the commits) for Kelly's years at CMU & Cincinnati.
At CMU, he made 7 "dual-threat" offers and 5 "pro-style" offers. (Strangely, LeFevour was listed as a "pro style" by Rivals, even though he not only ran a lot for a quarterback, but led CMU in rushing).
At Cincinnati, he made 10 "dual-threat" offers (including Devin Gardner) and 7 "pro-style".
Note that some of those "dual-threat" guys may have been targeted for other positions than quarterbacks. Note too we are relying on Rivals' notion of what constitutes "dual-threat" and what constitutes "pro-style", which may not reflect what a coach sees in a player (see LeFevour).
But that is a heck of a lot of dual-threat offers to make, especially for a coach who is supposedly putting a premium on passing.
Compare it to Charlie's recruiting, for instance, where you had only 4 dual threat offers to 18 total; or to Mike Leach's recruiting -- a guy who truly does run a pass-first spread -- who made 4 dual-threat offers to 17 total.

I was actually more impressed with the other team's QB... then I remembered that Gunner was a sophomore in this game.
