instant mixtape

by Jay ⌂, San Diego, Monday, July 21, 2014, 18:18 (3538 days ago)

Post a song you love. Or like. Or that you think will fit with songs already posted. Youtube link it if you want to.

I promise I will put them all together into a mixtape. I have some travel coming up and could use a good mix.

When you say travel, are you going to be on the road

by oviedoirish @, Oviedo, Florida, Wednesday, July 23, 2014, 06:52 (3537 days ago) @ Jay

or do you want music for when you get to your destination? For on the road music, I would have to include Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs, Tonio K (e.g., Life in the Food Chain), The Blasters (e.g., Border Radio, Marie Marie), Roy Orbison (e.g., Pretty Woman), and the Talking Heads (e.g., Cities, Nothing But Flowers, Take Me to the River).

Future Islands (spoiler: greatest lead singer candidate)

by JPH, Tuesday, July 22, 2014, 18:03 (3537 days ago) @ Jay

Video of them performing "Seasons" on Letterman this spring. This lead singer is the 2nd coming of Jack Black, but appears to be completely un-ironic. Would've given this a standing O.

That must be awesome.

Cory Branan - Miss Ferguson

by irishvol @, Music City, USA, Tuesday, July 22, 2014, 08:05 (3538 days ago) @ Jay

Working from my phone, so it's tough to post links. You will just have to trust me. Miss Ferguson is just one of a number of great songs by the guy.

When I think long drive playlist, I think rootsy/Americana/alt country/etc. With some nod to where you are driving (e.g. Elvis/Sun/Stax if you are going through Memphis, Muscle Shoals if in AL, etc). Some others to consider in that vein (all of these have multiple good options)

- Wilco: Casino Queen
- Son Volt: Route
- Uncle Tupelo: Chickamauga
- Whiskeytown: yesterday's news
- Lucero: Tears don't matter much
- Jason Isbell: Alabama Pines
- John Hiatt: Memphis in the Meantime
- Drive By Truckers: Carl Perkins Cadillac
- Black Keys: Have Love Will Travel
- Kings of Leon: The Bucket
- Ryan Adams: To Be Young
- Jayhawks: Miss Williams Guitar

You get the picture...

I will also recommend the newest from Reigning Sound, which the WYMA guys reviewed last week. I love all their stuff, but this newest is great too.

I'll vouch.

you like 80s movies, right?

by Pat, in the cloud, Monday, July 21, 2014, 20:24 (3538 days ago) @ Jay

Wild Heart is the montage soundtrack to every 80s movie ever made. It's the first song on this video (although honestly the whole album is a paean to 80s Hughes-ian filmcraft).

And when you are done with that and need some more guitar in your life, some old Titus Andronicus. Heard this one the way home today and I made the trip in record time. nsfw-ish.

And just because you might not get enough of it at home.

I love modern songs that sound like they're from the 80's

A good rule of thumb is that if you're making a summer mixtape and can't find a way to shoehorn this guy into the stewpot, then you did not, in fact, make a summer mixtape.

Extra credit: Jack White, "Temporary Ground". Saw him live over the weekend, and this one in particular stuck out in the midst of a fantastic set. Plenty sticky if you give it a few spins:

They are sorely underappreciated

by irishvol @, Music City, USA, Tuesday, July 22, 2014, 13:31 (3537 days ago) @ KGB

The Rat is a near-perfect rock and roll song. They somewhat got their due in that one (and Little House Of Savages)

But songs like Heartbreaker and We Can't Be Beat and Louisiana and Angela Surf City (and others) haven't gotten near as much attention. And they should have.

First band we saw live in Seattle when they opened

by JN, Seattle, Tuesday, July 22, 2014, 15:44 (3537 days ago) @ irishvol

for Fleet Foxes. And they just killed. They were trying out tracks for Heaven, including Heartbreaker and Love Is Luck. But they opened with Angela Surf City and just blew the roof off the Paramount.

Good call. Also Angela Surf City

I think I like it even better acoustically:

There's an acoustic version on the True Trans ep with some understated, elegantly haunting backing vocals.

I agree the new lp is great and they really delivered live. I think I've probably listened to them more than any other artist this year.

Yep.

They played on Friday afternoon at the festival I attended in Louisville. Good set.
