Using HCC's FOIA document from Illinois and the overall TV deal numbers provided by Mandel ( http://www.bluegraysky.com/forum/index.php?id=20268 ) can we extrapolate how much of the $14,401,444 TV money came from the Big Ten Network?

Here's what Mandel provided:

"¢ Big Ten Network: 25 years, $2.8 billion* through 2031-32

"¢ ABC/ESPN: 10 years, $1 billion through 2016

"¢ CBS: 10 years, $20 million for basketball through 2018-19

* -- projected revenue

Let's leave aside the Mandel number ("projected revenue") for the BTN for the moment.

ABC/ESPN provides ($1 billion ÷ 10 years ÷ 11 teams) = 9,090,909 per year on average (I know the numbers likely scale from the first year to the last, so $9.09 million is not the actual 2009 number, but let's go with it for now.)

CBS provides ($20 million ÷ 10 years ÷ 11 teams) = 181,818

Illinois FOIA reports $14,401,444 TOTAL for television revenue.

Does that make the BTN portion for Illinois for 2009 a paltry ($14,401,444 - 9,090,909 - 181,818) = 5,128,717 ?

That can't be right.

they had the BTN slice at $6.5 million.

Either way, it's a far cry from $22 million.

It looks right to me

I'm not really surprised by the high degree of fluffery that is apparently being exposed. I'm just grateful for those who are doing the work of exposing it.

If so, the math would be 14,401,444 - 8,333,333 - 166,666 = $5,901,44, which is not much better. Your math seems right to me, but what do I know?

EDIT: On the TV number, that's $2.8 billion ÷ 25 ÷ 12 * 0.51 = $4,760,000 in projected revenue. That 51% is the Big Ten's controlling share of the BTN

I was told there wouldn't be any math

by Greg, the 'Dena, Wednesday, June 02, 2010, 13:46 @ Jay

Mr. Delaney specifically said that he would give me big round numbers and I wouldn't have to try to add, subtract, multiply, or goesinta any of them. I trusted him. Why are you changed the rules?

Sincerely, Dr. Kevin White
