prompted by JRT below, a quick MOE review for '12

by Jay ⌂, San Diego, Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 18:18

For the third straight year we showed improvement in MOE: 9.26%, down from 11.37% in 2011 and 12.92% in 2010.

In terms of offensive errors, Alabama was our 3rd best game. I never would have guessed that.

Wasted timeouts should be an official stat.

Maybe I'll count this year.

yppd/yscore on Alabama

by Supe ⌂, VA, Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 21:05 @ Jay

One thing I do with yppd/yscore, is I look at how a team performs relative to the average performance of the other team for both offense and defense.

By this measure, ND's offense was at +1.3 relative to Alabama's typical opponent. This is the 4th best game of the season and better than the season average of +0.8.

ND's defense, on the other hand, was +0.4. This is the worst game of the season - where the season average was -0.9.

Defensively, the +1.3 delta from the season average is the 3rd worst defensive performance in Kelly's tenure:
2011 Michigan: +3.7
2010 Navy: +1.7
2012 Alabama: +1.3
2010 Miami: +1.1
2010 MSU: +0.8
2011 Maryland: +0.8
2012 Navy: +0.8

(basically, this is saying that relatively speaking, these were the worst games every season)

Some of these games were blowouts where we subbed liberally. But a few of them were just downright embarrassments.

overall penalty ranking

by Jay ⌂, San Diego, Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 18:42 @ Jay

Overall we had 71 penalties for -550 yards which put us just inside the top quarter of least penalized teams (#32).

Conclusion: penalties were not a major flaw in 2012.

We did a great job avoiding 10 & 15 yard penalties

by Ken Fowler, Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 19:00 @ Jay

We were 46th in penalties per game, but 28th in penalty yards per game.

Alabama was t-6th and 7th, respectively. But very few other good teams (with the notable exception of South Carolina) were better when it came to penalties.

Only 2 delay of game?

by Mark, Cloud City, Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 21:02 @ Jay

But how many time outs were called to avoid the delay of game penalty?

That's my biggest fear w Tommy Rees at QB. I remember cringing as he'd try to change the play w only 5-8 seconds left on the play clock in 2011 ...

I expect Kelly to have a plan for that

by Jeff (BGS), A starter home in suburban Tempe, Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 21:17 @ Mark

If the play call is taking too long to come in or pre-snap reads are dragging out, I think we'll either see more tempo or scripted plays or something.

Only 5 holding penalties?

by CK08, Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 19:18 @ Jay

When did we turn into Michigan?

Only 2 delay of games is pleasantly surprising. Were they both in the Purdue game?
