How are you feeling about the team now?

by Pat, in the cloud, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 05:21 (4605 days ago)

I know there have been a few threads along these lines during the bye week, but what's one more that we can save off for future enjoyment. So let's talk what you do and don't like about the team to this point and what you are and are not looking forward to the rest of the season.

Happy about:

Being 4-0. (something only 3 of us predicted prior to fall camp)

The play of the defense overall.

The immediate impact on defense by (redshirt) freshmen. Russell, Day, Farley, Springmann, Shumate, Baratti. All have done a great job, some in very limited play, to improve the defense.

All-American seasons by Tuitt and Te'o.

Zeke Motta playing himself into an NFL draft pick.

Danny Spond solidifying the main weak point in the defense.

Disappointed about:

The interior of the OL.

The tackles of the OL a bit as well.

Koyack's blocking and how it keeps Eifert from being a bigger receiving threat.

Cierre Wood's number of carries.

Ben Councell's disappearance.

Looking forward to:

More Tuitt and Te'o.

The increased use of the young receivers and Troy Niklas in the passing game.

Davonte Neal returning a punt for a TD.

The game when Golson settles down, kicks ass, and ramps up 2013 expectations.

Not looking forward to:

The ongoing uncertainly at QB.

A game we lose when the defense can't bail out an inconsistent offense.

The "Diaco to [open coaching job]" rumors during the height of recruiting.

Oh, and here's our pre-fall camp prediction thread, for your current enjoyment.

I think we've dramatically overachieved on defense.

by Kevin @, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 08:20 (4605 days ago) @ Pat

I think a better passing attack may yet put up some points, but that's not a criticism -- the defensive coaches have done a magnificent job. Depending on what comes open, we may well be in our last season with Mr. Stratton.

The right side of the OL has been horrible, and that's a real problem. Cierre and Atkinson aren't very good at pass-blocking. So when they come into the game, you pretty much know ND isn't going to pass and probably shouldn't run to the right. Based on who's in the game, even the layperson has a decent idea what's going to happen.

I'm happy to be 4-0. Of the five troublesome teams on the schedule, I think we've beaten the two we match up best against. Stanford is the next-best matchup, a feeling made stronger after watching their QB play horribly against UW.

I think ND can beat Stanford. I don't think we have much of a shot against USC or Oklahoma. I don't know much about Pitt or BYU, other than Pitt's QB is not very good. I'm pretty hopeful ND can finish 10-2, which would be a very good season.

actually, Cierre is probably the best at blitz pick-up

by Spesh ⌂ @, Los Angeles, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 08:27 (4605 days ago) @ Kevin

but you're absolutely right about Atkinson. There has been only one play, I believe, that has started with Atkinson in the backfield and not ended up as a run. It was a play action pass off the outside zone against Navy.

I think we need to see it at least once against Miami. Their safeties will have to help out in the run game given how bad they've been. This is the perfect opportunity.

Cierre's been getting kudos for blitz pickup for a while.

What gives on Oklahoma?

by FunkDoctorSpock, Your Nightmares, B* tches, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 08:27 (4605 days ago) @ Kevin

Is that based on rep, what they've done this season, or both? Just asking.

They've only played three games, two against FBS teams.

They were less than impressive against UTEP, who is sitting at 1-4, and lost at home to KSU.

In their two FBS games they've scored 43 points and given up 31.

They have yet to force a turnover against an FBS team.

Their defense is good

by Jeff (BGS) @, A starter home in suburban Tempe, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 10:48 (4604 days ago) @ FunkDoctorSpock

I know it is early, but they held their opponents to fewer points than any other team on their opponents' schedules.

It isn't really an achievement to hold Florida A&M to 13 points when Tennessee State and Southern can hold them to 14.

And K-State scored 24 points, which isn't a ton, but doesn't exactly indicate defensive dominance.

they did a nice job on KSU through three quarters

Other than the name on the jersey and the stadium? I think they've lost a lot of luster.

And the good vibes on Golson from the first three games outweigh what happened in the first half against UM, by quite a lot. Anyone who expected a smooth upward trendline on Golson's development was kidding themselves. Luckily, we have a coach who recognizes this, as well as the long-term benefit of sticking with him.

We'll probably still lose a couple of games, but I doubt that I'll feel suicidal if we're not playing for the NC in January considering the consensus expectations back in August.

on Golson

by Spesh ⌂ @, Los Angeles, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 07:50 (4605 days ago) @ KGB

He was one throw away from turning it around against Michigan. On the two plays before his bone-headed INT, he made two really good throws, including one tough one where he stayed in the pocket and found Daniels (?) in the middle of the field.

I didn't see the jitters or anything else bad on that specific drive leading up to the INT. He just made a foolish mistake, the kind that you can learn a lot from on the sideline. My guess is that Kelly realized he couldn't have any more turnovers in that type of game, so he pulled him. I think there's good reason to believe that Golson is going to come out on Saturday and show a lot of improvement.

None of this happens in a vacuum, either.

by KGB, Belly o. the Beast, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 08:02 (4605 days ago) @ Spesh

Kelly knows how good his defense is, and he may view playing Rees in handoff-and-short-pass mode as something akin to Mike Brey's burn offense for us.

I think you're right, and this worries me

by Jay @, San Diego, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 08:39 (4605 days ago) @ KGB

The more gravity this season takes on, the more the coaches might be tempted to go to game-manager-Tommy at the expense of the phenom.

That's a reasonable concern.

When I saw that ND landed another BB recruit. I kinda took a second look at Brey's recruiting and realized that the "burn" may actually disappear shortly because he may actually have all his pieces in place. I compare that to Kelly and his D with regards to bringing along Golson.

Somewhere.

A strange impending feeling of dread

by Jeremy (WeIsND), Offices of Babip Pecota Vorp & Eckstein, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 06:24 (4605 days ago) @ Pat

As in, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Its terrible that we as ND fans have to be conditioned in this way, but that's the way it goes I suppose.

Love the fact that we're 4-0 and finally got the Michigan monkey off the back. Love the pressure we're getting with (essentially) the base defense and minimal blitzing. Love the efforts from the young'uns, particularly in the secondary.

While I am worried about the QB/WR positions, I do feel that they'll continue to get better as the year goes on, provided Golson's confidence can take the hit of another "benching" or two.

The interior OL play is really frustrating. Before the season started, I think most of us would have pegged Cave and Watt as likely NFL prospects. That certainly isn't the case right now. Cave looks overwhelmed, and I suppose I can't blame him. He's essentially tasked with running most of the offense while holding Golson's hand. But I thought he would do much better. Golic was always going to be the weak point in the line, and its disappointing that someone behind him isn't pushing harder to get in there. I think the ultimate solution is Lombard to RG, with someone else (Nick Martin? Elmer?) eventually taking the RT spot. But it looks like we're going to have to make do for the rest of the season. Tough to see that side of the line getting much better.

I was convinced we were going to lose each game

by CK08, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 07:08 (4605 days ago) @ Jeremy (WeIsND)

Until we got up 40-10 on Navy, and until the clock hit 0:00 in all of the other three games.

I was seriously worried Rees was going to fumble the snap on the kneel down against Michigan and we would get Denarded once again.

Last year made me really skittish during games.

also, tough to be disappointed re: Councell

by HumanRobot @, Cybertron, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 05:35 (4605 days ago) @ Pat

Particularly since Spond has emerged. I think Spond's emergence really allays my fears that the defense asks too much of the Dog spot.

Likewise, I'm a bit disappointed that Ishaq Williams isn't a factor, but there isn't much of an opportunity for the guy with the way Shembo is playing.

if there's one thing to be happy about re: QB

by HumanRobot @, Cybertron, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 05:29 (4605 days ago) @ Pat

Isn't it that Rees as a junior seems to fully grasp the offense and has become willing to play within himself? Doesn't that lay to bed the whole "the offense is too damn complex" train of thought a touch?

Once Kelly gets a bevy of QBs that have been learning this thing for three years, I think he's gonna really start cooking with gas.

With Diaco, I think it's a matter of how badly does he want to be a head coach. He'll probably have a smattering of MAC offerings. Is that good enough for him or would he want to hold out for a higher profile spot?

I realize that all QBs develop at different rates...

by BPH, San Diego, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 11:30 (4604 days ago) @ HumanRobot

and that this isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, but I got to say: I'm still all in on Golson, but I honestly expected more from him than I've seen so far. And I'm not sure how much credence there is to the redshirt freshman caveat given some of the numbers I'm seeing from other such QBs.

Marcus Mariota, Oregon - 1,103 yards, 69 percent, 11 TDs, 4 INTs
Brett Hundley, UCLA - 1,480, 66, 11, 3
Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M - 1,094, 70, 10, 0

Golson - 641, 56, 3, 3

I really hope he takes a big step forward on Saturday and begins to make all this moot.

that's where I am as well

by HumanRobot @, Cybertron, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 11:56 (4604 days ago) @ BPH

downside of QB situation

by HumanRobot @, Cybertron, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 06:55 (4605 days ago) @ HumanRobot

If the season ended today, I think we'd be in full-on Camp Tommy vs Camp Andrew vs Camp Everett vs Camp Gunner and potentially vs Camp Malik.

The assets of our QBs:

Tommy
+Seems most consistent on short passes
+Can run offense without hitches
-weakest arm
No turnovers yet this season, is that just lack of exposure?

Andrew
+Strong arm
+Best running threat of the QBs
-Linebackers!

Everett
+Strong arm
+Low turnovers
-consistency on short passes

Gunner
+Hasn't been on the field to underwhelm yet
-No game experience

I don't think so at all.

by KGB, Belly o. the Beast, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 07:55 (4605 days ago) @ HumanRobot

Are there a lot of people who actually think that starting Rees is a good idea? Or Kiel, for that matter? Or that still believe in Hendrix, even a little bit? There's no evidence to support any of them other than maybe Rees.

I'm not attributing this to you, but it absolutely blows my mind that anyone would want to [s]cut bait[/s] open up the competition again after the Michigan game, essentially ignoring the first three weeks of the season. Hell, Golson didn't even play an entire half last week.

imagine it's the day after the USC game

by HumanRobot @, Cybertron, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 08:07 (4605 days ago) @ KGB

Golson's stats are

200/356 (56%)
2564 passing yards
20 total TDs
12 interceptions
4 fumbles
(4 times his current stats)

At that point, it's probably reasonable to consider if Golson is our best option.

he might not get to 12 picks

by Jay @, San Diego, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 08:54 (4605 days ago) @ HumanRobot

Like Holtz told Beuerlein:

"Coach, thats great, how do you know?"

"Because once you hit eleven I'm benching your ass."

Will he have 8 rushing TDs?

I think Rees is probably firmly entrenched at #2. Call him a closer or backup or whatever, but I think his role will be as a safety net from here on out. I'm not sure that Hendrix is in the mix at all, and Zaire will almost certainly redshirt.

Having said that, if the season ended today, I suspect that Kiel and Golson would be duking it out for the #1 spot.

I think this is right

by Jeremy (WeIsND), Offices of Babip Pecota Vorp & Eckstein, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 07:16 (4605 days ago) @ Jeff (BGS)

At this point, I think even Tommy realizes that his role is, essentially, "backup QB extraordinaire." And if this season is telling us anything, its that Andrew Hendrix will probably never see meaningful PT again.

I imagine its been made clear to Zaire that he's going to be redshirted next season. The interesting question is what becomes of Kiel. I would expect Kelly to give Gunner every chance to compete for the starting job next year, but I would also expect Golson to take a big step forward in his 3rd year in the program.

Regardless of the outcome of Kiel vs. Golson this offseason, I have a strange, warm, fuzzy feeling about the QB situation through roughly 2018.

Hendrix is a pretty good athlete.

by Bryan (IrishCavan), Howth Castle and Environs, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 07:53 (4605 days ago) @ Jeremy (WeIsND)

I wonder if he would be well suited to play another position...WR? TE? Safety? Of course, I've seen rumors that Rees will leave after this year...no idea if there is some validity to them or people just speculating on the interwebs.

Re:Diaco, I think we're safe this year.

by ReginaldVelJohnson @, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 06:18 (4605 days ago) @ HumanRobot

I agree that he may get some sniffs from a few MAC-type teams, but ultimately I think he'll stick around this year. We'll lose Teo and Motta, but on balance I think we may have a chance to be even better on defense next year. I think that will appeal to him, and liekly generate some better HC offers. Though, as you said, it's kind of dependent on how anxious he is (if at all) to get his own gig.

I think Diaco needs work on the BS side of head coaching

by Jeff (BGS) @, A starter home in suburban Tempe, Tuesday, October 02, 2012, 07:05 (4605 days ago) @ scriptcomesfirst

When I was about 10, this neighbor kid used to follow me around all the time. He was a little dorky, but a nice kid and big ND fan. My younger sister had a little crush on him, and once tried to kiss him behind our barn. Well, he wanted nothing to do with her and ran away from her screaming. I can still picture his skinny arms flailing out of his Shaun Cassidy t-shirt.

Of course, he was so hysterical, he wasn't paying attention to where he was going and he ran smack dab into a rotting tree so hard that he actually knocked it over. The oddest thing though was that a huge swarm of ladybugs came out of that dead tree, I've never seen anything like it. Well, the kid just freaked out and started screaming "Bees! Bees! Bees!". His ND cap fell into his eyes as he ran around flailing his arms and I think he even wet his pants. His parents heard him screaming from a couple of hundred yards away, and even they came out to chuckle.

As he was flailing around, the kid stumbled into a big patch of thorns and started getting nicked up pretty bad. The whole time he kept yelling, "Bees! Bees! Bees!". I tried to pull him out, but with his arms flailing, he ended up smacking me with some thorny branches, so I just waited until his dad came over and pulled him out. I ended up with a dozen deep scratches from those thorns, but the kid must have had 50. Crazy story, I know.

A couple of years later, we moved when my dad got a job down in Indy, but I always wonder what happened to that kid.

And, if he can make good money as a DC, there's less incentive to chase down a head coaching job.

Now, if the NFL came calling for a DC position, that might be a different story, but I think ND should be able to play in the same ballpark as the NFL salary-wise for a DC.
