per year. Here's how they do it:

Pitch Makeup

At ground level the drainage system installed is connected to huge suction fans which allow us to blow air through the pitch and suck water out. These pipes are covered with a 300 mm layer of permeable pebble stone which has a drainage rate of about 900 mm per hour. Over this a carefully selected Wexford sand forms the lower rootzone into which the undersoil heating system is installed. The undersoil heating system works on a series of hot water pipes transferring heat to the sand rootzone. The sand continues to a depth of 260 mm with a specialist fibre stabilising agent tilled into the sand to keep the surface stable. On top of this is a 40 mm specialist sod which is a 100% natural sandy loam soil. The sward is 90% perennial ryegrass and 10% fescue.

they had for the last Ireland game?

It was two old Irish guys, sitting in a pub, I think, arguing about the game. Each had a fist balled up, and the camera cut between them:

"OY-rish!"

"NEIGHHH-vy!"

"OY-RISH!!"

"NEIGHHHHH-VY!!"

here's how USC does it

by Pat, Right behind you, Wednesday, September 05, 2012, 10:50 @ Jay

Just in time for Norm Chow's return to the Coliseum as Hawaii's head coach, USC Coach Lane Kiffin confirmed Thursday that USC would no longer make the stadium available to visiting teams for walk-throughs the day before games.

...

Kiffin said the decision to cut off access to the Coliseum was "solely based" on preserving the field.

The Trojans held last week's mock game on their campus practice field rather than the Coliseum for the same reason, Kiffin said.

"We put a lot of resources into that field and what I'm hoping is that our fans are going to see the best that field has ever looked," Kiffin said. "The problem with walk-throughs ... you tear it up because people put cleats on and go on there."

But couldn't USC stipulate that visitors wear turf shoes or running shoes for the walk-through?

"Yeah," he said, "but how would we control that?"

Kiffin said other schools have cut off access for walk-throughs, but he declined to identify them.

"I don't want to start getting into names," he said.
