I consume a dad-appropriate level of trivial information, but one item stood out from the rest: the layers of the earth are ordered from most to least dense, starting at the core. When the primordial materials first started spinning, this acted like a centrifuge and organized everything by density - heavy metals at the bottom, gases at the top.

Our current understanding (guess) at the composition of each layer has been aided by studying asteroids, where the materials are still randomly placed. By analyzing the composition of a sample, we get some insight into how much of each type of material likely makes up our world.
