If you squint really hard

you can see something of a case for Michigan's defensive reputation being based to some extent on bumslaying. They gave up miniscule yardage/yards per play to crappy offenses like Florida, Rutgers, Minnesota, but gave up very middle-of-the-pack figures against teams like Wisconsin, Ohio State, South Carolina, and got obliterated by Penn St (8.3 ypp).

They were definitely a lot better in 2016, though even then they gave up 6 ypp to Florida St. in theit bowl game 9as opposed to, say, 39 total yards against Rutgers).

I guess the msot fair minded thing you can say is that really good offenses (and, uh, South Caronlina)have been able to move the ball effectively on them. If we have a really good offense we should be ok, which is about as tautological as it gets
