Purely anecdotal, but...

We have a dining room and use it every morning and every night. It's nothing fancy, but it's where the table is, and we stick to few rules, but we always make sure our kids don't eat in front of a TV. Initially we started this b/c we realized our kids wont focus on actually eating a meal if there's a distraction, but since then we've also seen studies about obesity and eating in front of a TV which has made it easier to stick to the rule.

Meanwhile, many of our relatives have more "open concept" homes without a real dining room. Maybe a "dining area." And I feel like whenever we visit, there ends up being at least a few people just sitting at the table, eating, while watching TV. Granted, that may be a function of bad TV habits and/or just the occasions we're visiting.

Anyway, I wonder if a move towards fewer homes with no formal dining area would end up contributing to obesity/poor eating habits.
