I agree that, by all evidence so far, the shooter wasn't trying to "Make America Great Again" or to answer far-right dog-whistles from rank assholes like Yiannapolis. It's dangerous and reductive to assume that these murders happened because of MAGA; it's equally dangerous and reductive to assume that the cause is just an evil man with a shotgun. I'm hesitant to speculate about causes at all, but surely certain contagious social viruses--toxic masculinity, objectification and dehumanization of the "other," the constant branding of journalists and newspapers as the enemy--played at least a peripheral role.
