I think five years is is the minimum

Back in the 80s, coaches would often renew their contract with a year or two left. However, this was often used as a tool for negative recruiting: “That coach only has a year left on his contract. If you sign with him, you’ll be playing for a different coach in two years.” So, schools and coaches tried to keep 5 years on every coaches contract at any point in time. Some did this by rolling contracts, some with specific language in the contract (a 10-year deal cancellable after 5 years), and some by signing 6-8 year deals every couple of years.
