Phil didn't have a ton of options after Kerr
Rambis, Shaw, Cleamons, and Frank Hamblin are the only former head coaches with triangle experience and none of those guys would excite the garden masses. Enter Fisher who is something of a clean slate. Its hit or miss if he'll translate into a good coach but he was an unquestioned floor leader who understands the triangle inside and out, and he still has respect in NBA locker rooms.
Basically Phil needs someone to plant the triangle tree and establish the culture. Fisher can do both of those things. Later as the team gets better, or wholesale changes are made, Phil can hire a more established coach.
So basically I don't know about Fisher but I tend to view him as a transitional hire.
