Give life back to music

If you want to listen to the new Daft Punk album, you can through iTunes. Go to...

https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/daft-punk/id5468295

Click the blue "View in iTunes" button, then the "Listen Now" button when iTunes loads up.

It's pretty unlike any of their other albums. No drops here. Definitely a ton of throw back to that 70s sound. Other than maybe one or two tracks, I really like it. Then again, given my handle, that was almost a certainty.

Any reviews of the new Vampire Weekend?

It's been a while since I've so eagerly anticipated a new release. I noticed that the Metacritic score is higher than any of the first two albums, including a 100 from the A.V. Club (whose reviews I generally appreciate the most).

I don't think you'll be disappointed.

It's legitimately outstanding, IMO. Certainly a lighter touch than previous releases, but the melodies are gorgeous and the choruses are durable enough to carry around with you for the day after only a couple of listens. The sound is also more traditional on the whole and now largely devoid of the Afro-pop influences that dominated the first record. Though an effective hook at the time, the perceived kitch factor also limited VW to some degree as artists over the long haul. In any case, it's extremely well-crafted, well-paced, well-sequenced; I think it's the best album I've heard so far this year. Chef recommends.

It's very, very good

I'm really surprised it's gotten such glowing reviews.

Because to me, it's one of those oh, we became popular so now we're going to execute our complete polar shift of style now that we think we're legitimate artists, and in the process, start to sound like Just Another Indie Band (tm) kind of albums.

I'll spare you the details of how badly I wanted to gouge out my eyes while listening to it, but I very literally think that everything that made the first two albums endearing is missing from this album, and that I won't spend any more time on the band going forward.

Well, critics certainly love them a good "maturity" record.

For me...I don't know what to tell you. I just think the songs, by and large, are really excellent. In other instances, I would probably hammer a band for going away from "A-Punk" and "Campus", but I think a lot of it comes down to the fact that VW were never "rock" or "punk" or whatever to begin with. Maybe that's not fair to the Thermals, but if you're going to start out hard, then by god you'd better keep playing fucking HARD. Because that's what I loved about you in the first place. In that respect, the shift here feels much more subdued to me, because my enjoyment of VW was always more about melody than volume. And in that respect, I don't find the new album lacking in the least, although there's plenty to be said for personal preference.

Once I got over that they will not release another

"Vampire Weekend" (their debut album), I pretty much love this--even the single that initially didn't do much for me. In retrospect, this music is much more relevant to me than songs about New England seaside towns, anyway. It's earnest but can still be fun, just in a different way.

Based on this, I just ordered it

Accompanied by two others I've been wanting: Dream of the Blue Turtles, and El Camino (predominantly for "Gold on the Ceiling"). That combo should totally jack up my Amazon recommendations for the near future.

New National also streaming on iTunes. Really liking that.

Love the new National single.

(Not sure how "new" it is, but I first heard it a couple of weeks ago.)

Yes, it's very very National-y. But I like that.

And the lyric

"and if you want / to see me cry / play "Let it Be" / or "Nevermind"

...Is just SO great.

Really like the whole album

Sounds to me more like Boxer than High Violet, which is great imo.

Here's my question ...

Both of those could be references to The Replacements. So is it them or is it The Beatles and Nirvana?

Since The National (along with their younger, slacker brother The Hold Steady) are the quintessential Gen X band, I'm going with the Mats.

'Mats for the discerning listeners.
