More details about the playoff structure are coming out

For the most part these echo the strong rumors that Jay posted a few days ago.

However, there are a few tweaks in Russo's AP report that make things interesting. First, the reported fact that the selection committee will give preference to conference champions. Before it was "regardless of conference championship results". Now it seems that they will get some boost (but perhaps only over a fellow conference team?)

The other angle that I think is even more important to ND is ND's payout role in the new playoff structure. What will ND's slice of the TV pie be? As we all know, we went away from the feast or famine model a few years ago to get a much smaller cut in exchange for a minimum yearly guarantee. Could ND possibly get back to the feast or famine model? Should they? I would think they should, but that's without knowing just what the TV payouts are going to be.

Here's what Russo has on the money breakdown.

HOW MUCH? Conservative estimates have the television right to the new playoff system being worth at least double what the BCS was worth. That means $300 million easy, probably more like $400 or $500. How it gets divided among the conferences is still to be finalized, though criteria has been set up:

- On-field success

- Teams' expenses

- Marketplace factors

- Academic performance of student-athletes

In short the five power conferences (SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC and Pac-12) will get more than the others. The Big East no longer will get a big share, but how much smaller will it be?
